Amid drones, automated targeting systems, recoil dampers for cannons, and intelligent earplugs, Mirit Glas put glass to the ultimate test—smashing and burning it whenever possible—to demonstrate the unique value of specialized glass.
Mirit Glas joined 400 other companies at FMI Industry Day 2021, hosted by the Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization in Ballerup. The event is recognized as the largest defense industry gathering in the Nordic region.
“We are not here because we dream of a golden defense contract,” admits Sales Manager Johan Stenfeldt Hansen, before continuing:
“Our main purpose here is networking. For us, the exhibition is a great place to demonstrate that we can deliver glass with unique properties. In that sense, FMI Industry Day is an ideal venue. What we have in common with the other exhibitors is that we all provide specialized solutions tailored to the task. In fact, several of our existing customers – and many potential ones – are exhibiting here as well.”
Joining the event from Mirit Glas were Production Manager Keld Lauridsen and Sales Manager Johan Stenfeldt Hansen. They showcased glass capable of withstanding extreme temperature fluctuations and highlighted the significant differences in strength between ordinary glass, tempered glass, and Kemirit – Mirit Glas’ own version of ultra-strong chemically tempered glass.
Visitors to the stand were invited to try smashing the glass – if they could. Many gave up when faced with the 2 mm thin Kemirit, which requires more than 50 kg of pressure to break.
Both military personnel and representatives from participating industries visited Mirit Glas’ stand to discuss glass solutions and see firsthand how the right type of glass can make a good solution even better.
FMI Industry Day 2021 is part of the Danish Defence’s ‘Open For Business’ strategy, aimed at supporting Danish companies and Danish solutions. The exhibition was launched in 2012 and has continued to grow ever since.

It was the first time Mirit Glas chose to participate in Industry Day hosted by the Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation.
‘For us, it makes perfect sense to stand here and smash glass,’ says Sales Manager Johan Stenfeldt Hansen with a smile.
‘If we are honest, there are not many solutions made entirely of glass. In reality, we are usually a third-party supplier to other specialized – often high-tech – solutions. By bringing our “little glass circus” to the exhibition, we have the opportunity to engage in dialogue with potential partners and show them that the right glass is also a technological solution.’
For Mirit Glas, it is important to communicate that since 1952 the company has been producing and delivering glass tailored to customers’ needs.
‘The fact that we have been here since 1952 does not mean we have been making the same glass for 70 years. It means we have evolved together with our customers for 70 years. When we produced tempered glass for television screens in 1952, that was considered an advanced glass solution of the time. Today, we have moved on to supplying glass for everything from advanced solutions in the offshore industry to specialized glass for electronics, pharmaceuticals, and the food industry. And that also includes glass used in the defense sector,’ emphasizes Johan Stenfeldt Hansen.
Since its founding in 1952, Mirit Glas has supplied glass to the business sector. The company began by producing tempered glass that protected televisions of the day. Since the 1950s, Mirit Glas has steadily expanded its capabilities to deliver all types of glass demanded by industry – whether for use in production processes or advanced applications requiring unique properties.
Today, Mirit Glas is a custom-order service and trading company, manufacturing and supplying glass in both large-scale series and very small individual pieces.
We provide a wide range of glass products, all manufactured to order – and we also maintain one of Denmark’s most extensive raw material inventories.
