Denne typen glass kjennes av mange som \u201dgorilla glass\u201d, men \u201dgorilla glass\u201d er faktisk en spesifikk r\u00e5vare (aluminiosilikat glass), som herdes og brukes til bl.a. smarttelefoner. Vi har lignende r\u00e5varer som ogs\u00e5 er sv\u00e6rt godt egnet til kjemisk herding. Det er glassets kjemiske sammensetning som avgj\u00f8r hvor egnet det er. Dermed bevarer man overflatens opprinnelige optikk.<\/p><p>Kjemisk herding er spesielt velegnet for glass som er tynnere enn 3 mm, og glass helt ned til 0,1 mm i tykkelsen kan herdes kjemisk. Glass som er tykkere enn 3 mm kan ogs\u00e5 herdes kjemisk, men da dette er en prosess som styrker overflaten, blir slag- og b\u00f8yestyrken forholdsmessig mindre jo tykkere glasset er. Man kan slipe, skj\u00e6re og bore i det, men de kantene som blottlegges av slikt arbeid vil ikke v\u00e6re herdet, fordi glassets styrke blir redusert. Det er ogs\u00e5 mulig \u00e5 kjemisk herde glass som allerede er buet i forskjellige fasonger.<\/p>\n<h3>Sikkerhet<\/h3>\n<p>Til tross for \u00f8kt styrke overfor slag og b\u00f8ying kan kjemisk herdet glass ikke kvalifiseres som et sikkerhetsglass. Det granulerer nemlig ikke som termisk herdet glass, men g\u00e5r derimot i stykker og splintrer som vanlig glass. Derfor b\u00f8r du velge termisk herdet glass, hvis det er viktig at glasset granulerer. Og glassets tykkelse b\u00f8r da v\u00e6re minst 3 mm.<\/p>\n<h3>Herdeprosessen<\/h3>\n<p>N\u00e5r man herder glass kjemisk, setter man i gang en prosess der man styrker glassets overflate ved \u00e5 bytte yt mindre natriumioner fra glassets overflate med st\u00f8rre kaliumioner fra flytende kaliumnitrat. Utvekslingen tar 16-18 timer og aktiveres ved at man senker glasset ned i et kar med oppvarmede salter.
